Given the emergence of the digital Age, social networks have grown in popularity and become an integral element of modern life. It changes the process of learning in ways and means that could never have been imagined before, including English language learning. By means of social networks such as Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and Telegram, nowadays learners have the opportunity to communicate with native speakers of other countries. In my opinion, social networks have a great impact on teaching the English language since they create genuine and entertaining learning processes.

Among the most excellent benefits of using social media in learning English is the fact that learners can engage in real interactions. This is because they can engage with native speakers. Moreover, they can practice the English language. For instance, they can post messages, engage in the comment section of the posting of other users who are probably native speakers, watch live videos, and even make calls using applications such as HelloTalk. They can also participate in Telegram channels that relate to the learning of the English language. These are all aspects that assist them in feeling more confident as they put into practice what the textbooks entail.

Another factor which makes social media platforms such as Facebook and YouTube so successful at promoting English learning is that it adds fun to the learning process. The main advantage of social media platforms over other forms of learning processes is that these platforms have visually appealing and engaging material which interests students, especially members of Generation Z and Alpha. YouTube and TikTok have millions of pieces of learning material in the shape of videos produced by social media influencers, which give tips to students on learning English. Learners have the advantage of selecting videos according to their interests and preferences.

Despite the above advantages, social media has significant limitations. The first significant limitation is that it does not have a structured learning process. This means that, unlike formal learning, social media does not have a defined curriculum for learning, which may be a cause for confusion for the learners on what to learn first or how to assess progress. Another significant limitation is that it may cause a misunderstanding of different cultures. To learn a language means more than mastering its vocabulary and grammar. It involves knowledge of the timing, such as when to use formal or informal expressions. Without proper guidance from teachers or a curriculum, learners may use words or expressions in inappropriate situations.

In conclusion, social media plays a prominent role in English learning because it offers interactive and enjoyable learning opportunities. However, it also has limitations, such as the lack of structure and the risk of cultural misunderstanding. Therefore, learners should use social media wisely by setting clear goals and choosing suitable platforms. When used purposefully and carefully, social media can become a powerful and effective tool for improving English skills.
